Why am I getting a blank screen when trying to watch live TV on Safari?

Modified on Fri, 26 Jun at 12:38 PM

If you are trying to watch live channels on ITVX using the Safari browser on a Mac, you might find that the stream fails to load, leaving you stuck on a blank screen/blue X. (You may also notice that on-demand programmes still work perfectly fine).

Why is this happening?

This issue is caused by the Low Power feature on macOS. When your Mac is in Low Power, Safari restricts certain background tasks and auto-play features to save battery, which currently prevents our live video player from launching.

How to fix it

Option 1: Use a different browser

Because this issue only affects Safari, the easiest workaround is to open ITVX and watch live TV using a different web browser, such as Google Chrome.

Option 2: Turn off Low Power Mode

If you prefer to keep using Safari, you can get your live stream working again in just a few clicks by temporarily disabling Low Power Mode:

  • The quickest way: Click the Battery icon in the top-right corner of your Mac's menu bar and disable Low Power.
  • Alternative method: Click the Apple logo () > System Settings > Battery, then change the Low Power Mode setting to Never.

Once Low Power Mode is disabled, refresh the ITVX page and your stream should now load and play normally!

If you want to save battery, you can turn the Low Power energy mode back on after the live stream has started playing.
